Activities In and Around Twizel and the Mackenzie Country

Twizel is a hidden gem for mountain bikers, with a number of new, varied mountain bike and walking tracks on land access obtained by DOC, with stunning mountain, lake and canal scenery. There are numerous commercial trips available in the area that cater for every ability from the novice to the downhill adrenalin junky.

Twizel has something for everyone, from a farm theme mini golf to heli bike mountain biking. There's a wide variety of eating establishments in Twizel, enough to cater for every taste, ranging from restaurants and bars, to pizzerias, cafés and takeaways.

Aoraki Mount Cook, Australasia’s highest mountain, has the Tasman Glacier, the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere. For inclement weather days, there's the The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre with it digital planetarium and 3D theatre.

Flightseeing tours are available from Tekapo, Twizel and Glentanner Park in a choice of helicopter or fixed wing plane. Worth a visit too, is the Mount John Observatory, including the Astro Café.

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail from our highest mountains, past great lakes and rivers, and down to the ocean. Suitable for all ages, the 9 section bike trail is an easy to intermediate grade, linking the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. Allow 4-6 days for the entire ride, or simply try a day excursion.
